5. Amaranthus albus var. parviflorus Moquin-Tandon (1849: 264) View in CoL

Type (lectotype here designated):— U.S.A. in Pensylvania, 11 August 1841, Rafinesque s.n. (P004021940 [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/1449489920970QCpL0PfphnL0MelJ). = Amaranthus albus Linnaeus (1759: 1268) . Type (lectotype designated by Raus 1997: 143):—NORTH AMERICA. Habitat (in Philadelphiae maritimis), Herb. Linn. No. 1117.1

LINN [digital image!], image of the lectotype is available at http://linnean-online.org/11627/).

Nomenclatural notes:—The variety parviflorus was described by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 264) to distinguish morphotypes of Am. albus characterized in having the leaves subtending the glomerules smaller (“foliis glomerulis floribusque minoribus”). The author cited four collections: “In Pansylvaniâ Rafin.! In h. DC.”, “Etruriâ (Thomas! Moric.!)”, “ Cataluniâ (L. Dufour! N. 144)”, and “ Andalusiâ (Boiss.!)”. These specimens are sintypes according to the Art. 9.5 of the ICN. I found only one of above the cited specimens (at P, barcode 004021940), that was collected by Rafinesque in Pennsylvania in 1841. The features of the plant beared on the sheet match the Moquin-Tandon’s diagnosis, and this specimen is here designated as the lectotype of the name Am. albus var. parviflorus .

Taxonomical notes:—The diangostic character given by Moquin-Tandon (1849: 264) for his var. parviflorus has not taxonomic value in Am. albus according to the current concept (see e.g., Mosyakin & Robertson 2003, Iamonico 2015). I here propose to synonimized Am. albus var. parviflorus with Am. albus s.str.
