Type: BRAZIL. São Paulo: Apiaí , 6 June 2010, C. Takeuchi & T. Takeuchi 76 (holotype SP, isotype MAC). Fig. 4A–B View FIGURE 4 .

Distribution and habitat:— Endemic to Brazil, A. costicalyx occurs from south of the state of São Paulo to Paraná. It grows in dense rainforest and in semideciduous forest, on forest margins, sometimes in disturbed habitats.

Specimens examined:— BRAZIL. São Paulo: Apiaí , 6 June 2010, C . Takeuchi & T . Takeuchi 75 ( SP). Bom Sucesso de Itararé , 19 August 1995, V. C . Souza et al. 8899 ( ESA, SP); São Lourenço da Serra , 29 May 1968, A . Krapovickas 14370 ( ESA, SP) . Paraná: Bocaiúva do Sul , 31 December 1969, G . Hatschbach 22768 ( MBM, SPF, SPSF); 4 December 1977, G . Hatschbach 40211 ( BHCB, MBM). Castro, 23 July 1998, L. R. M . Souza et al. s.n. ( UEC109174 About UEC ). Pedra Preta , 3 September 1939, M . Kuhlmann s.n. ( SP 41635 ). Rio Saltinho , 29 May 1968, A . Krapovickas 14369 ( CESJ, ESA, SP, SPF) .

Schumann (1891) cited A. costicalyx in Flora Brasiliensis for the specimen Glaziou 1583 (P).This name was later used by Baker (1893), but without presenting a Latin diagnosis. The characters observed in Glaziou 1583 especially the indumentum, and the morphology of the calyx and mericarps are similar to the characters present in the specimens from the state of São Paulo and Paraná annotated as Abutilon costicalyx Schumann ex Baker. In the present study we validate Schumann’s epithet.

Abutilon costicalyx is notable in its velvety indumentum, consisting only of stellate trichomes, calices with strongly ribbed nerves, invariably equal to or longer than the petals.

Conservation status:— According to the criteria found in Mamede et al. (2007) A. costicalyx should not be considered a threatened species, but it deserves attention as it fits into the category Near Threatened (NT).
