Type material. Holotype: ♂, Brazil, Amazonas, Manaus, Catalão , 60°01`10``W – 03°08`00``S, 07.vii.2008, light trap, C.S.N. Oliveira & L.M. Fusari — LEIA GoogleMaps . Paratypes: 2 ♂♂, same data as holotype— LEIA GoogleMaps ; 2 ♂♂, Mato Grosso, Ribeirão Cascalheira, Suiamissu river, Campina Verde farm, 51°53`47``W – 12°55`59``S, 10.x.2007, light trap, L.C. Diagnostic characters. A. parannulata sp. n. differs from other Ablabesmyia species by the combination of the following characters: front and middle femora with 3 bands, hind femur with 1 band, middle tibia with 3 bands, m-cu positioned toward f-cu, R 3 apex close to C, gonostylus with 6 apical teeth; tapered megaseta, aedeagal blade extending beyond basidorsal lobe, dorsal lobe club-shaped with fringe and anal point present.

Etymology. Named due proximity to the species Ablabesmyia annulata ( Say, 1823) .

Male (n = 4, unless otherwise stated): Dimensions: Total length 3.50–4.16 mm. Wing length 1.69–2.0 mm. Total length/wing length 1.87–2.08. Wing length/length of profemur 2.30–2.63.

Coloration ( Figs 57A–F View FIGURES 57 , 58A View FIGURES 58 ): wings, thorax and abdomen follow figures 57A, 57B and 57F respectively. Legs: P I —emur with 3 bands, tibia with 4 bands, the second small and incomplete band; P II —femur with 3 bands, tibia with 3 bands; P III —femur with 1 band, tibia with 3 bands. Ratio of bands, related tibiae and tarsomeres 1 follow table 42. Hypopygium: gonocoxite apex and gonostylus base brown.

Head: antenna with 14 flagellomeres; AR 2.22–2.44; apical flagellomere 103–125 µm and subapical seta 35– 38 µm long; temporals 44–55; postoculars 13; coronal triangle 125–128 µm long and base 90–95 µm; clypeus bearing 30–42 setae, 102–125 µm long and 94–105 µm wide; labrum with 2–4 setae, 110–120 µm long and 60–63 µm wide; tentorium 163–180 µm long; cibarial pump 300–340 µm long and orifice 55–62 µm from apex; palpomeres 1–5: 50–53; 84–110; 125–143; 123–145; 290–320 µm long; palpomere 3 with sensilla capitata 43–50 µm from base.

Wing ( Fig. 57A View FIGURES 57 ): width/lenght 0.26–0.29; VR 0.79–0.82; C 1.65–1.90 mm long; Sc 0.84–1.0 mm long; m-cu 31 µm long and 500–610 µm from arculus; fr 630–740 µm from arculus; R 3 apex close to C; lateral vein to Cu 1 present; brachiolum with 3–4 setae; squama with 36–40 setae.

Thorax ( Fig. 57B View FIGURES 57 ): antepronotals 11–20; humerals 5–8; prealars 21–23; supraalar 1; scutelars 39–41.

Legs ( Fig. 57C–E View FIGURES 57 ): P I —apex of tibia 55–65 µm wide and with apical pectinated spur 61–63 µm long, spur ratio 0.53–0.56; tarsomeres 1–2 with 2 pseudospurs 60–73 µm long. P II —apex of tibia 53–60 µm wide and with 2 apical pectinated spurs 65–73 and 43–53 µm long, spurs ratio 0.54–0.55 and 0.50–0.66 respectively; tarsomeres 1–3 with 2 pseudospurs 50–56 µm long. P III —coxa with 5 central microsetae; apex of tibia 58–68 µm wide and with 2 apical pectinated spurs 65–73 and 48–55 µm long, spurs ratio 0.50–0.58 and 0.54–0.62 respectively; tarsomeres 1–2 with 2 pseudospurs 55–66 µm long. Hypopygium ( Fig. 58 A–D View FIGURES 58 ): tergite IX with 2–4 central setae; anal point covers partially the aedeagal complex; phallapodeme 30–48 µm long; square sternapodeme 98–120 µm long; gonocoxite 153–168 µm long and 105–130 µm wide; gonostylus 150–165 µm long, with 6–7 apical teeth; tapered megaseta; HR 0.93–1.03; HV 2.33–2.60. Aedeagal complex: grooved aedeagal blade 58–65 µm long and base 8–12 µm, 9/10 5–8 µm; dorsal lobe clubshaped with fringe 13 µm long, lateral lobe and basidorsal lobe present.

Female and immatures: unknown.
