From the Greek tetra(four), platys(wide, broad) and pous(foot), possibly alluding to the expanded male mesotarsomeres (" ♂ ont les tarses intermediairesfaiblement dilates") [masculine].  Diversity. About 45 species in the Nearctic (two species, one of them adventive), Neotropical (25 species), and Palaearctic (17 species) Regions.  Identification. The two species found in North America have been covered by Lindroth (1968: 883-884, as harpalinusgroup).
