Type species:  Carabus granulatusLinnaeus, 1758 (ICZN 1954). Etymology. From the Greek carabos(an animal in Aristotle) [ma sculine]. The animal in question, named  Locustain Latin, is uncertain. According to Camus (1783: 259), caraboswas a grasshopper, to Cuvier (1803: 369, 370) a crawfish, and to Latreille (1812: 142) a Cerambycidae. Olivier (1795: [35] 1) reported that the name  Carabuscame from the scientific name  Scarabaeusslightly modified.  Diversity. About 910 species (Lorenz 2005: 72-114) in North America (14 species), Mexico (two species), and the Palaearctic (about 895 species) and Oriental (about five species) Regions.  Identification. Van Dyke (1944) reviewed the North American species and provided a key for the identification of all species except  Carabus auratus. Lindroth (1961a: 30-42) covered all but two species (  Carabus finitimusand  Carabus forreri).
