Plinia ekmanianais transferred to Myrciadue to its inflorescence structure (a “panicle” with terminal dichasia), free calyx lobes and two ovules per locule. In the protologue, Urban (1927)compared Plinia ekmanianawith two species of Myrcia: Myrcia manacalensisUrb. (1923: 85)and Myrcia guildingiana( Grisebach 1864: 242) Krug. & Urban(in Urban 1894–1895: 57) (at that time treated as Plinia guildingiana(Griseb.) Urban [1927: 23]). Myrcia ekmanianaalso resembles Myrcia abbotiana( Urban 1924: 341) Alain ( Liogier 1971: 138). Features such as the prolonged hypanthium, the two-locular ovary and glabrous receptacle, together with vegetative similarity with Myrcia abbotiana, place the species in M.sect. Aulomyrcia.
