<spm:hasContent> Diagnosis. Hemicrepidius ruficorniscan be distinguished from all other Hemicrepidiusspeciesby the combination of moderately long and suberect setae, a curved prosternal process in lateral view, an emarginate posterior margin of the hypomeron with a narrowly truncate tip, and punctation on the pronotal disc that is smaller than the punctation on the head. The only species it could be confused with is H. memnonius. Characters to distinguish the two species are given in the Diagnosis of the latter species above.</spm:hasContent>

<spm:hasContent> Redescription.Length 11.5–19.0 mm, width 3.0–5.0 mm; color red-brown to dark red-brown, elytra not contrasting with pronotum; often legs, antennae and posterior edge of pronotum, ventral edges of elytra, and edges of abdominal ventrites paler; integument shining. Setae moderately long, suberect, yellow. Head:Punctures subumbilicate, separated by half of puncture diameter to nearly contiguous; frons weakly concave anteromedially, some with slight triangular impression medially when viewed dorsally; frontal carina broadly rounded, complete when viewed from front, frontoclypeal region complete and narrow medially, frontal carina weakly projecting in lateral view; eyes large and strongly bulging, ocular index 55–60 ( n= 3); antenna serrate, antennomere 2 subcylindrical, antennomere 3 subtriangular, 1.5× length of 2, setation intermediate between antennomeres 2 and 4, antennomere 3 three-fourths to subequal in length to 4, antennomeres 4–11 gradually becoming narrower apically, basally 2× longer than wide to about 3× longer than wide apically, antennomeres 4–11 with medial line bearing less setae than edges, antennomere 11 with tip constricted as a pseudosegment, antenna extending beyond pronotal posterior edge by 1–2 antennomeres. Prothorax:Pronotum 1.1–1.3× wider than long, widest at hind angles or just anterior of midlength; sides weakly arcuate, almost subparallel laterally, gradually narrowing at anterior half, slightly dorso-ventrally compressed anteriorly along lateral edge; hind angles nearing subparallel, sometimes with sinuate lateral edge anterior of hind angle, dorsal carina present directed antero-medially; punctures on disc smaller than punctures on head, simple to subumbilicate but determinable only at high magnification (50×), nearly touching to separated by two puncture diameters, punctures closer and larger laterally, nearly contiguous, separated by less than half puncture diameter, subumbilicate; posterior edge with sublateral notches. Hypomeron with subumbilicate punctures, punctures similar in size to lateral pronotal punctures, nearly contiguous anteriorly, less so towards large semicircular impunctate area on posterior one-third to one-fourth; posterior margin emarginate ( Fig. 36c) with hind angle visible in lateral and ventral view and narrowly truncate at tip. Prosternum with punctation smaller than punctation on hypomeron, simple, punctures nearly touching laterally, less dense medially; anterior lobe slightly deflexed, broadly rounded, partially covering ventral mouthparts; prosternal process curved dorsad between procoxae in lateral view, narrow and straight to slightly sinuate past procoxae. Pterothorax:Mesoventral cavity with lateral edges sinuate, not visible anteriad mesocoxae in lateral view; posterior edge of cavity broadly pointed. Metaventrite with punctures simple, smaller than punctures on hypomeron, separated by one puncture diameter throughout. Scutellar shield elongate, about twice as long as wide, narrowly rounded posteriorly, sides sinuate, dorsal surface flat to weakly concave, anterior margin nearly straight, setae directed posteriorly, similar in length and color to setae on pronotum and elytra. Elytral striae weakly impressed basally; interstriae flat to slightly convex, punctures small, scattered, giving wrinkled appearance; basal carina crenulate. Legs with lobes on tarsomeres 2 and 3 wide, visible dorsally, lobe on tarsomere 3 largest, lobe on tarsomere 2 second largest, lobe on tarsomere 1 small, narrow, visible laterally, lobe on tarsomere 4 smallest, in most only visible ventrally. Abdominal ventrites:Punctures simple, slightly smaller than punctures on metaventrite, moderately dense, separated by one puncture diameter, less dense medially; fifth ventrite broadly rounded; sides of each ventrite with microserrations. Male genitalia( Figs. 36d, e): Parameres subparallel on basal two-thirds and slightly sinuate basal to pre-apical expansions, preapical expansion strongly acute (<45°) laterally; apex of paramere narrowly pointed, weakly membranous, setose ventral patch near pre-apical expansion with 5–8 apical dosal setae. Median lobe broad, about same width as near basal prongs throughout before narrowing at apical one-sixth; basal struts forming 90-degree angle latero-basally. Basal piece with majority of area membranous, membranous area broadly rounded medially.</spm:hasContent>

<spm:hasContent> Distribution.Specimens were examined from the following states and provinces: CANADA: MB, NS, ON, PE, QC; UNITED STATES: GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MT, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TN, VT, WI, WV ( Fig. 38a). Notes. The name Asaphes ruficornishas historically been synonymized with H. memnonius, following LeConte (1853). After examining Kirby’ s typein the BMNH, it was discovered that it was the same species as Candèze’ s typeof Asaphes brevicollis, also in the BMNH, hence the revised synonymy presented here. The confusion about the name A. ruficornis, beginning with LeConte, likely led Candèze to accidently redescribe the species. All literature records of H. brevicollisshould be changed to H. ruficornisas a result of the synonymy. An additional layer of confusion was added by Horn (1880)when he synonymized A. brevicolliswith H. memnonius, stating it was a “less developed form”. This synonymy was troublesome for many, as A. brevicolliswas often recognized as valid by later authors ( Blatchley 1910; Brooks 1960). Blatchley (1910)stated that H. memnoniusand A. brevicolliscould be separated by ratios of the antennomeres, with H. memnoniushaving antennomere 3 subequal to 4 and A. brevicollishaving antennomere 3 shorter than 4. After extensive examination, this character proved too variable to be of use, varying between sexes within H. ruficornis. Molecular data also support the recognition of H. ruficornisas a valid species separate from H. memnonius( Figs. 1–3). Because of the historical confusion with H. memnonius, it is unclear if larvae have been described for H. ruficornis. However, larvae have been associated ( Etzler et al.2014). A description of the larva will be performed in a later work. Types Examined.Of Asaphes ruficornis: Holotype:Nova Scotia/ Asaphes ruficornis Kirby, N.scotia, 5852, new with Kirby; female; type locality Nova Scotia; in BMNH.
