Typification of Hieracium transylvanicum View in CoL
Hieracium transylvanicum View in CoL was described from specimens collected in the Banat region, SE Romania: ‘ In fagetis elatioribus in subalpina usque e.c. [‘excelsum collem’ vel ‘excelsum cacumen’] ad Thermas Herculis in Banatu et versus alpem Retyezát in Transylvania ’ ( Heuffel 1858a: 27). The species description was repeated in Enumeratio Plantarum in Banatu ( Heuffel 1858b), and is often incorrectly regarded as the protologue of H. transylvanicum View in CoL .
The Hungarian Museum of Natural History in Budapest (BP) houses three specimens of Heuffel’s original collection with his own hand-written labels. The label texts are consistent with the protologue. The oldest specimen collected in the Retezat Mountains in 1852 is designated as the lectotype of the name H. transylvanicum View in CoL .
