Typification of Hieracium transylvanicum

Hieracium transylvanicum was described from specimens collected in the Banat region, SE Romania: ‘ In fagetis elatioribus in subalpina usque e.c. [‘excelsum collem’ vel ‘excelsum cacumen’] ad Thermas Herculis in Banatu et versus alpem Retyezát in Transylvania ’ ( Heuffel 1858a: 27). The species description was repeated in Enumeratio Plantarum in Banatu ( Heuffel 1858b), and is often incorrectly regarded as the protologue of H. transylvanicum .

The Hungarian Museum of Natural History in Budapest (BP) houses three specimens of Heuffel’s original collection with his own hand-written labels. The label texts are consistent with the protologue. The oldest specimen collected in the Retezat Mountains in 1852 is designated as the lectotype of the name H. transylvanicum .
