Type:— BRAZIL. Paraná: [from Carambeí and Castro to Rio Itararé ], F. Sellow 4830 (lectotype F0055217 , fragment!, here designated; isolectotype NY00008247 , fragment!.; the former lectotype B †, designated by Sleumer 1959: 472). Epitype, here designated:— BRAZIL. Paraná: Carambeí, rio S ã o Jo ã o , 2 December 2013, M.E. Engels & E.D. Lozano 1902 ( MBM395764 !; isoepitype FURB60673 , image!).
Note:—The material used to describe Agarista pulchella is the collection Sellow 4830 originally deposited in the Berlin-Dahlem herbarium (B) and later destroyed by the fire in 1943. The remaining material consists of two sheets with fragments from B (F0055217F, NY00008247). No lectotypification of this name has yet been proposed.
Meisner in Martius (1863) indicated the type location in Antonio Pereira, Minas Gerais (in prov. Minarum editis, ad Antonio Pereira: Sellow). On the other hand, as already indicated by Judd (1984, 1995), the locality of the type is very questionable since nearly all collections are from Paraná or Santa Catarina. Urban (1893) indicated that the collections from Sellow under the numbers 4800 to 5246 were collected in the northern part of the Paraná State, from Carambey and Castro to Rio Itararé, which supports the information that the type locality is incorrect. In this way, it is secure to affirm that the type location is mistakenly informed, and the actual location of the type specimen of Agarista pulchella is in the northern part of the Paraná state, possibly near to the current area of the Parque Nacional dos Campos Gerais. In this way, following the Art. 9.2 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018), we corrected this mistake.
We designated the specimen F0055217 as lectotype because it is a fragment from the holotype ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ) and comprises fragments of leaves, fruits and seeds. As well as the isotype from NY (00008247), none of them have enough material to fully represent the concept of the name A. pulchella . To complement the specimens lack of information and structures, we are also designating the specimen Engels & Lozano 1902 ( MBM395764 View Materials ) as an epitype ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ) following Art. 9.9 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018). This specimen comprises branches with fruits in accordance with the protologue, is morphologically similar to the type specimen (see photo F220527 [4587]), and was also collected in Paraná state in the region where probably the original specimen was collected. Additionally, this material is available digitally in speciesLink (SPECIESLINK, 2022).
