Note on Andromeda subrotunda :—Pohl was the naturalist in charge for the Brazilian Imperial Royal Herbarium at Vienna. He arrived in Brazil on 7 November 1817. Until 1821 he travelled through Minas Gerais, Goiás, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. He was appointed as curator at the Vienna Natural History Museum and Vienna Brazilian Museum , which was built upon the collections brought back from that expedition. He published “Reise im Innern von Brasilien” (Travels into the Interior of Brazil, two volumes, 1832 and 1837) and the “Plantarum Brasiliae icones et descriptions” (two volumes, 1826–1828 and 1828–1833).
The type specimen of Andromeda subrotunda was published in the “Plantarum Brasiliae icones et descriptions”. The collection site is indicated as “habitat in rupibus, circa Villa S. Jo ã o d’El Rey Capitaniae Minas Geraës”. G.Don (1834) cited this information as “native of Brazil, in province of Minas Geraes, on rocks about Villa St. Joao d’el Rey”, and Candolle (1839) describe the location as “in Brasiliae prov. Minarum generalium in montanis ad rupes circà villam Sancti-Johannis Regii”. Sleumer (1959) stated in the revision of Leucothoë that the type was not viewed and is “apparently no longer available”. Judd (1984) in the review of American Agarista only indicated that the type specimen was not seen. We here confirmed the existence of the holotype in W under the number 0059384. It is the only material corresponding to Andromeda / Leucothoë subrotunda deposited in the herbarium and matches with the illustration provided in “Plantarum Brasiliae icones et descriptions ii. 32. 1827” (t. 121) ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). Additionally, the label in that material also comprises the number “518” in the right Upper corner, that may indicate the collection Pohl number.
Note on Andromeda pistrix :—The material used to describe Agarista pistrix is a Sellow collection without number collected in “Brasilia tropica” with no date or location indicated. Sellow dispatched his collections to the Royal Botanical Garden at Scĥneberg, now part of B ( Urban 1893, Moraes 2020, Carvalho et al. 2022), and the specimens used to describe this new species through his collections were probably deposited in B, but this information cannot be confirmed. Chamisso & Schlechtendal (1833: 508) did not indicate in the protologue a single specimen used for the description or specified the herbarium or other collection in which the type was deposited. Thus, the materials related to this collection could be potential syntypes. The syntype material consists of three sheets (NY00009751, F0055223F, F0055224F) with few fragments from the original material.
Sleumer (1959) called the B† specimen as “ holotype ” and the remaining duplicate specimens as “isotypes”, but according to Art. 7.11, Ex. 13 of the ICN (Turland el al. 2018), Sleumer’s (1959) designation has the status of “ lectotype ”. The remaining duplicate specimens (syntypes) became isolectotypes. Since that lectotype was destroyed, a new lectotype must be designated (Art. 9.11).
Sleumer (1959) retrieved the type location (Minas Gerais: Serra do Lenheiro, pr. S ã o Jo ã o d’El Rei), whereas Judd (1984, 1995) kept partially the information about the location type (Minas Gerais: Serra do Lenheiro). We here keep the information indicated by Sleumer (1959) because Serra do Lenheiro is located in S ã o Jo ã o d’El Rei.
We designated the specimen F0055223 as lectotype, following the Art. 9.12 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018) because it is a fragment from the lectotype designated by Sleumer (1959) ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ), consisting of fragments of leaves and flowers. None of the remaining isolectotypes, has enough material to fully represent the concept of the name A. pistrix . To complement the specimens lack of information and structures, we also designated Glaziou 17110 (P04507711) as an epitype ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ), following the Art. 9.9 of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) ( Turland et al. 2018). We elected this specimen because it was collected in the same locality of Sellow’s Andromeda pistrix type and presents all the features cited in the protologue. Additionally, this material is available digitally in speciesLink (SPECIESLINK, 2022) and also in the digital herbarium database from P (MNHN, 2022).
