This widespread species is common in the tropics and sighted in all continents except Antarctica. In the Neotropics it has been recorded e.g. from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador and Venezuela ( López-Figueiras 1986; Galloway & Quilhot 1998; Sipman & Wolf 1998; Calvelo & Liberatore 2002; Sipman 2006; Boom et al. 2007; Cáceres 2007; Sipman et al. 2008; Coppins & Aptroot 2009; Lücking et al. 2011; Frisch et al. 2014; McCarthy 2014).
