scientific name

Asparagus bojnurdensis Hamdi & Assadi
status

Asparagus bojnurdensis Hamdi & Assadi (in Hamdi et al. 2017: 72, 22: 1).

Holotype:— IRAN. [North] Khorasan Prov.: Bojnurd, Bojnurd west, between Shahabad and Aghemam, near Satellate , 1200 m, Zangooei & Alvani 15793 ( FUMH, photo!, isotype FUMH, photo!).

Despite its publication in 2017, the species is missing in Flora of Iran ( Assadi 2023) as an accepted, doubtful or synonym. However, the holotype is cited in the list of specimens examined as A. verticillatus (page 9 in Assadi 2023). Whether the author of Flora of Iran who is the co-author of the new name does not agree on the novelty of A. bojnurdensis or has not been aware of the paper that has been co-author of, we are not able to judge. We have seen the photo of the holotype (thanks to Mr. Mohammad Reza Jourharchi). In addition to holotype material, another collection was reported from the border of Golestan National Park in NE Iran [Khorassan: Almeh towards Sulegerd, 1250m, 13 July 2002, Mousavi, Abbasi & Paryab 8956 ( FUMH)]. Based on the photo of the holotype and isotype and study of ample material from the Golestan National Park Area ( Akhani 1998, 2005), we conclude that A. bojnurdensis is a synonym of A. verticillatus .
