Type material: No holotype was designated or it is lost; Krøyer in 1961 however designated a syntype that can be found in the ZMUC collections with reference number CRU 6797 .

Distribution: worldwide, tropical and subtropical waters (42 °N – 40 °S) and the Red Sea (Witman & Stagl 1996).

Distribution in New Zealand: North of New Zealand, between Three Kings Islands and North Cape (Tattersall W.M. 1923).

Ecology: Epipelagic ( Mauchline & Murano 1977).
