Genus Laona A. Adams, 1865
Laona A. Adams 1865: 324 . Type species (by monotypy): Laona zonata A. Adams, 1865 . Japan.
Ossiania Monterosato 1884: 147 View in CoL . Type species (by original designation): Philine scutulum Lovén, 1846 . Northeastern Atlantic.
Diagnosis. Shell rounded to quadrangular; smooth or with chain-like or net-like sculpture; parietal wall protruding into posterior half of aperture; gizzard non-muscularized, lacking plates. Radula with a 2–6.1.0.1.2–6 formula.
Remarks. Philine scutulum Lovén, 1846 , the type species of Ossiania Monterosato 1884 , was synonymized with Philine quadrata by Ohnheiser & Malaquias (2013), which was transferred to Laona by Oskars et al., (2015), therefore Ossiania is here placed in the synonymy of Laona .
According to Oskars et al. (2015) Laonidae is genetically distinct from Philinidae and includes animals lacking gizzard plates, typically with net-like sculpture (but also smooth or with chain-like sculpture) and pigmented bands on the shell, not seen in other philinoids. The northeastern Pacific species Philine californica Willett, 1944 matches the morphological characteristics of other Laonidae and although it has not been sequenced, it is here transferred to this group.
