Atylotus pallescens ( Walker), 1871 View in CoL

Tabanus (Ochrops) pallescens Walker, 1871: 256 View in CoL .

Type-locality. Tor ( Egypt, Sinai).

Diagnosis. Blackish species; lower and middle calli jointed; wings with veins black, whitish only at basal margin; abdomen ferruginous with 3 stripes.

Local distribution: Sinai.

Geographical distribution. Egypt.

Remarks. This species is not represented in the Egyptian Reference Collections.

Chvála (1988), in his catalogue of Palaearctic Tabanidae , mentioned this as a doubtful species. Müller et al. (2012) also mentioned this species as doubtful and erroneously stated that Efflatoun (1930) placed Tabanus pallescens under “ Tabanidae of doubtful origin”. While this species was indeed not mentioned at all in the earlier Egyptian works by Kröber (1925a, b), Efflatoun (1930) and Steyskal & El-Bialy (1967). After examining the paper of original description by Walker (1871) who mentioned the type locality of species as Tor (Sinai) we added this species to the Egyptian fauna depending on this type locality.
