Much-branched shrub, 0.5 m tall, older plants collapsing in the centre. Branches very densely leafy, erect and rigid. Leaves rigid, ericoid, keeled with a prominent midrib, twisted, patent or slightly reflexed, 6 mm long, the lower surface slightly woolly when young, glabrous later, often with waxy deposits on the surface, tips pungent. Synflorescences with very densely massed capitula in globose, terminal heads, interspersed with subtending leaves. Capitula homogamous, discoid, 1-flowered. Involucral bracts 4–9, up to 4 mm long, about half the length of the tube, outer bracts shorter than the inner, leafy and woolly at the apex, inner bracts scarious, acute. Florets bisexual, bright pink, widening in upper part; corolla lobes short, incurved, triangular, 5 mm long, thickened along the margins. Stamens 5, apical appendage lanceolate, basally tailed. Style bifid, slightly swollen at the base. Nectaries present in some florets, but generally reduced or absent. Cypselas covered with rather shaggy, adpressed hairs, ascending in upper half. Pappus setae 20–26, basally fused in a tube for at least one quarter the length, about as long as the corolla, setae barbed in lower parts, densely plumose in upper three quarters, tips not tufted. Flowering January to March.
