13. Stoebe prostrata Linnaeus (1771: 291) View in CoL . Seriphium prostratum (Linnaeus) Lamarck (1783: 273) . Type:— LINN 1048.3 (LINN!, lectotype, designated by Koekemoer in Jarvis & Turland (1998: 368), photo S!).

Low, prostrate or trailing shrublets, up to 0.35 m tall. Branches slender, slightly woody, profusely branched, with branches entangled, frequently very leafy. Leaves linear-oblong; up to 11 × 3 mm, mostly somewhat shorter, up to 7 mm; mucronate, flat, margins somewhat involute, twisted near the base and often curled pigtail-like; midrib prominent; abaxial surface tomentose. Synflorescences with capitula grouped in globose or subglobose, terminal heads, 10 mm in diam. Capitula homogamous, discoid, 1-flowered. Involucral bracts 8–10, in few rows, the outer hairy and green-tipped, the inner scarious, narrow and almost transparent, acute, slightly longer than the corolla tube. Florets bisexual, dark pink, light pink or white; corolla lobes triangular, spreading. Stamens 5, apical appendages lanceolate, basally tailed. Style bifid, swollen at the base. Nectaries present. Cypselas small, short-hairy with short, inflated, stout hairs, hairs adpressed in lower half spreading towards the annulus. Pappus setae 14–18, fine, fused at the base, about as long as the corolla tube, with a few short barbs near the base, plumose above. Flowering January and February, occasionally in March.

Distribution and habitat: — Western Cape mountains. Figure 31 View FIGURE 31 .

Ecology: —Rocky places at high elevations, 1 000–1 500 m.

Conservation status: —Least Concern.

Notes: —More robust plants of this species resemble St. cyathuloides , but in the latter species the cypsela hairs are longer and the heads are usually much smaller.
