Astelia Banks & Sol. ex R.Br. subg. Astelia
Note.
Flowers with a very short perianth tube (0.1-0.8 mm); anthers dorsifixed, versatile; ovary unilocular; seeds ovoid; funicle long, curved, with mucilaginous funicular hairs poorly developed that surround but do not adhere to the seed.
Remarks.
Molecular ( Birch et al. 2012) and morphology-based phylogenetic analyses (Birch unpublished PhD thesis 2011) indicate that Astelia subg. Astelia , as circumscribed by Skottsberg (1934), is polyphyletic. Astelia subg. Astelia is revised to include Astelia sect. Palaeastelia and Astelia sect. Astelia , which form a clade. Astelia sect. Desmoneuron is placed in a different clade and it is excluded from Astelia subg. Astelia .
