Range:— Florida; Antilles; southern Mexico to Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, SC, TA) and Uruguay.
Ecology:— Fairly common; terrestrial and saxicolous, rarely on fallen logs or epiphytic, in humid forests; 300– 2200 m.
Notes:— Two varieties are recognized in Bolivia: var. abscissum , with acute to acuminate pinnae having <18 vein pairs, and var. subaequilaterale Rosenst. , with long-acuminate pinnae having>18 vein pairs.
May be confused with Hymenasplenium delitescens , which has creeping rhizomes with swollen petiolar bases, toothed rhizome scales, unwinged rachises, and often diplazioid sori (i.e., arranged back-to-back on the same vein).
