Distribution: NE Puebla and W Veracruz ( Mexico) to NC Montana and SW North Dakota, NC Utah, C Nevada, and NC California ( USA), south to Baja California and C Sinaloa ( Mexico).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Subgenus Sylvilagus ( Gureev, 1964:169) . Revised by Hoffmeister and Lee (1963 b). Reviewed by Chapman and Willner (1978, Mammalian Species, 106).
