Diodora mirifica Métivier, 1972 View in CoL
Figure 152
Diodora minuta: Matthews & Kempf, 1970: 17 View in CoL (non Lamarck, 1822).
Diodora mirifica Métivier, 1972: 409 View in CoL –411 (pl. 1, figs 1–10) [Fernando de Noronha]; Rios, 1985: 14 (fig. 52); 1994: 26 (fig. 57); 2009: 32 (fig. 66); Rios et al., 1987: 58; Leal, 1991: 3738 ( Figs 2 View FIGURES 1 – 5 A-B).
Comments: Diodora mirifica is relatively common on Brazilian oceanic islands, particularly at the type locality, Fernando de Noronha. The species has been also found in Trindade ( Rios et al. 1987; Leal 1991), but it is relatively rare in coastal areas. It occurs in shallow waters and is characterized by minute dark spots splayed on the radial sculpture (Fig. 152). The samples collected by the MD55 expedition are juvenile specimens with the foramen not at the shell apex; a small beak is still present just posterior to the foramen (Fig. 152).
Measurements (in mm): MNHN #1: 3.4 by 1.3.
Material examined: Brazil. Espírito Santo; Ilha de Trindade, Enseada dos Portugueses, 20°30’15”S 29°18’46”W, 10–12 m, MNHN, 2 shells (MD55 sta. 1; Bouchet col., v/1987).
