Smittia yapensis Tokunaga, 1964: 525 View in CoL .

Pseudosmittia yapensis (Tokunaga) View in CoL , Cranston & Martin 1989: 262.

Material examined: FED. MICRONESIA: Yap, Rumung Island , at light, holotype male, 17.vi.1957, C. W. Sabrosky ( USNM 66541 ) ; Yap, Gagil, Gachapar , at light, allotype female, 19.vi.1957, C. W. Sabrosky ( USNM) . MARSHALL ISLANDS: Jaluit Atoll, Majurirok Island, from Hernadia flowers, 1 female paratype, 26.iv.1958, J. L. Gressitt ( BBM) .

Diagnostic characters: The male imago can be separated from P. brachydicrana by having a higher LR 1 (0.64 as opposed to 0.54–0.58) and longer more basally placed inferior volsella. The female has a divided tergite IX, forked postcubitus and straight Cu 1, but the examined specimens are damaged and incomplete.

Male imago (n = 1–2)

Total length 1.54 mm. Wing length 0.68–0.76 mm. Total length/ wing length 2.04. Wing length/length of profemur 2.55. Coloration yellow with yellowish brown vittae and brown preepisternum, postnotum and abdomen.

Head. AR 0.43. Terminal flagellomere 137 µm long. Temporals consisting of 6 very weak inner verticals and 3 outer verticals. Clypeus with 6–12 setae. Tentorium and stipes not measurable. Palpomere 2–5 lengths (in µm): 30, 57, 73, 94. Third palpomere with at least 1 scalpellate or pin-shaped sensillum clavatum.

Thorax. Antepronotum with median lobes slightly reduced, with 1 lateral seta. Dorsocentrals 11–12, acrostichals 2, prealars 3, no supraalars. Scutellum with 6 setae.

Wing ( Fig. 70 A View FIGURE 70 ). VR 1.61–1.63, VR 2 1.35–1.37. Anal lobe weak. C extension 32 µm long. R 4+5 ends proximal to apex of M 3+4, Cu 1 nearly straight, Brachiolum with 1 seta, other veins bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 41 µm long, single spur of middle tibia 27 µm long, spurs of hind tibia 45 µm and 21 µm long. Width at apex of front and middle tibia each 22–24 µm long, of hind tibia 37 µm. Comb of 13 setae, 25– 41 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 42.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 70 B View FIGURE 70 ; Tokunaga 1964 fig. 6g). Anal point absent, tergite IX with about 4 setae, laterosternite IX with 4 setae. Phallapodeme about 48 µm long, transverse sternapodeme about 46 µm long, no oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 70 C View FIGURE 70 ) about 11 µm long. Gonocoxite 107 µm long, inferior volsella 37 µm long, reaching to 0.94 gonocoxite length. Gonostylus 70 µm long, megaseta 5 µm long. HR 1.54, HV 2.20.

Female imago (n = 1–2)

Total length 1.36 mm. Wing length 0.68–0.74 mm. Total length/wing length 1.84. Coloration more yellowish than in male.

Head not measurable.

Thorax. Dorsocentrals 8–11, acrostichals 2, prealars 3. Scutellum with 4 setae. Other details not measurable.

Wing. VR 1.60–1.62, VR 2 1.33–1.35. C extension 101–105 µm long. R 4+5 ends above or slightly proximal to apex of M 3+4, Cu 1 straight. Brachiolum with 1 seta, C proximal to FR with 3 non-marginal setae, C between FR and apex of R 4+5 with 11 non-marginal setae, C extension with 10 non-marginal setae, R with 9 setae, R 1 with 4, R 4+5 with 11 setae, other veins bare.

Legs not measurable.

Abdomen not measurable.

Genitalia. Gonocoxite with 3 stronger and possibly a few weaker setae. Tergite IX apparently divided with altogether 16 setae. Cercus 43 µm long. Other details not measurable.

Pupa and larva

Unknown.

Remarks

Although the females are in a very bad shape they probably are conspecific with the males, indicated by size, chaetotaxy and coloration.

Distribution

The species is known from Micronesia and the Marshall Islands.
