Smittia kraussi Tokunaga, 1964: 523 View in CoL .

Pseudosmittia kraussi (Tokunaga) View in CoL ; Cranston and Martin (1989: 262).

Material examined: PALAU (BELAU): Koror Island , holotype male, ix.1952, N. L. H. Krauss ( USNM 66539 ) ; allotype female, same data as holotype ( USNM) ; paratype male, same data as holotype ( BBM) . FED. MICRONESIA: Kapingamarangi Atoll, Werua Island , 1 male, 9.vi.1954, W. A. Niering ( BBM) , Yap Island Gachapar, Gagil , 1 male, 19.vi.1957, C. W. Sabrosky (BBM.)

Diagnostic characters: The male is characterized by lacking an accessory lobe of the sharply pointed inferior volsella, a small sharply triangular anal point, no distinct crista dorsalis on the gonostylus and an AR of 0.50–0.65. The female has no postcubital fork and has lost the apical flagellomeres. It is possible that the female does not belong to this species.

Male imago (n = 1–3)

Total length 1.23–1.33 mm. Wing length 0.63–0.64 mm. Total length/wing length 1.80–1.96. Wing length/length of profemur 3.11–3.28. Coloration pale brown with blackish vittae to completely dark brown.

Head ( Fig. 78 B View FIGURE 78 ). AR 0.50–0.65. Terminal flagellomere 149–201 µm long. Temporal setae 5–6, consisting of 2 inner verticals, and 3–4 outer verticals; no postorbitals. Clypeus with 6 setae. Tentorium 85–91 µm long, 17–19 µm wide. Stipes 82 µm long. Palp lengths (in µm): 18–21, 21–27, 34–41, 39–46, 66–75. Third palpomere ( Fig. 78 C View FIGURE 78 ) with 3 scalpellate, pin-shaped sensilla clavata.

Thorax. Antepronotal lobes reduced medially, antepronotum with 1 lateral seta. Dorsocentrals 8–10, acrostichals 2, prealars 3–4. Scutellum with 4 setae.

Wing ( Fig. 78 A View FIGURE 78 ). VR 1.68–1.89. VR 2 1.11–1.37. Wing nearly cuneiform, but anal lobe slightly projecting. Costal extension 5–9 µm long. R 4+5 ending above middle between apex of M 3+4 and apex of Cu 1; Cu 1 straight. Brachiolum with 1 seta, other veins bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 25–32 µm long, single spur of middle tibia 21–30 µm long, of hind tibia 27–34 µm and 18–19 µm long. Width at apex of front tibia 25–32 µm, of middle tibia 16–25 µm, of hind tibia 25–26 µm. Comb of 10–12 setae, 18–27 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 48.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 78 E View FIGURE 78 ; Tokunaga 1964 fig 6e). Anal point 7–23 µm long, sharply triangular, with 6–8 setae; laterosternite IX with 3 setae. Phallapodeme 39–50 µm long; transverse sternapodeme 27–37 µm long, no oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 78 D View FIGURE 78 ) 11 µm long. Gonocoxite 101–105 µm long; inferior volsella sharply triangular and reaching to 0.77 gonocoxite length. Gonostylus 41–43 µm long, megaseta 5–7 µm long; HR 2.32–2.56, HV 3.01– 3.10.

Female imago (n = 1–2)

Total length 1.10–1.15 mm. Wing length 0.58–0.64. Total length/wing length 1.71–2.00. Wing length/length of profemur 3.20–3.40. Coloration pale with dark markings to completely dark brown.

Head. Antennal apex lost, three basal flagellomere 53, 39 and 39 µm long. Temporal setae 4–5, consisting of 2 inner verticals, and 2–3 outer verticals; no postorbitals. Clypeus with 9––12 setae. Tentorium 75 µm long, 7 µm wide. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 14, 23–25, 32–35, 37–41, 55–71. Third palpomere with 5–7 scalpellate sensilla clavata. Coronal suture 18 µm long.
