Pseudosmittia oahuensis (Hardy) comb. n.
( Fig. 83 A View FIGURE 83 )
Orthocladius (Smittia) oahuensis Hardy, 1960: 142 . Material examined: USA: Hawaii, Oahu, Poamoho trail, swarming at wet bank, paratype male with missing abdomen, 31.vii.1946, W.W. Wirth (BBM); paratype male; Hawaii, Oahu , Mt. Kaala , taken at summit in bog, 4,000 ft., 31.vii.1946, W.W. Wirth (BMNH).
Diagnostic characters: The strong and long, tapering anal point with lateral setae, combined with the forked postcubitus and the double inferior volsella separate this species from other members of the genus.
Male imago (n = 1–2)
Total length 2.93 mm. Wing length 1.30–1.64 mm. Total length/wing length 1.78. Wing length/length of profemur 2.19–2.55. Coloration brown with darker vittae and markings.
Head. AR 0.89–1.12. Terminal flagellomere 341–477 µm long. Temporal setae consisting of 3–4 inner verticals. Clypeus with 8–12 setae. Tentorium 131–135 µm long, 30–34 µm wide. Stipes 98–113 µm long. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 26–30, 38–45, 64–79, 71–90, 105–146. Third palpomere with 3 lanceolate sensilla clavata, 23 µm long
Thorax. Median antepronotal lobes strongly reduced, separate; antepronotum with 1–2 lateral setae. Dorsocentrals 12–13, acrostichals 2, prealars 3–4, no supraalar. Scutellum with 4–6 setae.
Wing. VR 1 1.57–1.65, VR 2 1.28–1.35. Anal lobe weak. Costal extension 71–79 µm long. R 4+5 distal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 sinuate at apex. Brachiolum with 1 seta, R with 11–12 setae, R 1 with 2–4 setae, costal extension with 0–1 non-marginal setae.
Legs. Spur of front tibia 49–53 µm long, spurs of middle tibia broken, of hind tibia 56 µm and 30 µm long. Width at apex of front and middle tibiae each 30–34 µm, of hind tibia 38 µm. Comb of 10–11 setae, 26–48 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 53.
Hypopygium ( Fig. 83 A View FIGURE 83 ; Hardy 1960 fig. 42 b). Anal point 94 µm long, tapering with about 20 lateral setae; laterosternite IX with 4 setae. Phallapodeme 94 µm long; transverse sternapodeme 124 µm long, no oral projections. Virga 23 µm long. Gonocoxite 225 µm long, with a row of 6–7 stronger setae on dorsal surface; no superior volsella; inferior volsella with two lobes reaching to 0.77 gonocoxite length, dorsal lobe pointed triangular, ventral lobe (accessory lobe) rounded at apex mostly covered by dorsal lobe. Gonostylus 109 µm long, megaseta 8 µm long; HR 2.07, HV 2.69.
Female, pupa and larva
Unknown.
Remarks
The smaller specimen from Poamoho trail is missing the abdomen and could conceivably belong to a different species. In some parsimony searches the species come out as sister species to P. mathildae .
Distribution
This species is known only from the island of Oahu in Hawaii.
