Material examined: ENGLAND: Essex, Epping Forest, Wake Valley Pond , lectotype female, here designated, 10.vii.1926, F. W. Edwards ( BMNH); 3 females, paralectotypes, same as lectotype ( BMNH) . BELGIUM: Wallonia, Liège, Chandfontaine , holotype female of Smittia brachyptera , 30.vi.1934, R. Leruth ( IRSN) .
Diagnostic characters: The female imago is separable from P. paraconjuncta and P. fusivenosa by having 7– 10 sensilla clavata on the third palpomere, divided tergite IX and gonocoxite projecting beyond tergite IX.
Female imago (n = 3–5, except when otherwise stated)

Head ( Fig. 89 B View FIGURE 89 ). AR 0.44–0.52, 0.49. Lengths (in µm) of flagellomeres 39–57, 46; 32–37, 36; 34–40, 37; 30– 37, 36; 71–73, 73. Apical antennal seta 34 µm long. Temporal setae 4–6, 5, consisting of 2–3, 2 inner verticals, and 2–3, 2 outer verticals; no postorbitals. Clypeus with 5–10, 7 setae. Tentorium 82–90,85 µm long, 9 µm wide. Stipes 69–73, 71 µm long, 23–30, 25 µm wide. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 14–18, 17, 21–23, 22, 34–41, 37, 32–39, 36, 41–53, 48. Third palpomere with 7–10, 9 sensilla clavata. Coronal suture 39–57 µm long.
Thorax ( Fig. 89 C View FIGURE 89 ). Median antepronotal lobes strongly reduced, antepronotum with 0(?)–1, 1 lateral setae. Dorsocentrals 6–8, 7; acrostichals 1–2; prealars 2–3, 2; supraalar setae absent. Scutellum with 2–4 setae.
Wing ( Fig. 89 A View FIGURE 89 ). VR 1.72–1.75. Postcubitus not forked. Anal lobe absent, wing cuneiform. R 4+5 ending far proximal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 straight, incomplete. R 4+5 and costal elongation fused for 114–171 µm. Brachiolum with 1 seta. Costa before FR and apex of R 4+5 with 11 non-marginal setae, fused costal extension and apex of R 4+5 with 5–7 non-marginal setae, R with 2–4 setae, R 1 with 1 seta, other veins bare.
