Pseudosmittia fusivenosa (Tokunaga) View in CoL

Smittia fusivenosa Tokunaga, 1964: 534 View in CoL .

Material examined: FED. MICRONESIA: Truk Atoll, Tonoas Isl. , holotype female, 20.xii.1935, Z. Ono ( BBM) . PALAU: Babelthuap Island , Ngaremlengui, light trap, misidentified allotype of P. palauensis , 3.vi.1957, C. W. Sabrosky .

Diagnostic characters: The fused R 4+5 and costal extension, incomplete straight Cu 1 and seminal capsules with transverse striations makes P. paraconjuncta , P. fusivenosa and P. conjuncta easily separable from other known females of Pseudosmittia . P. fusivenosa differs from both by having a VR 1.90–2.0 as opposed to 1.54–1.75.

Female imago (n = 1–2)

Total length 0.86–1.14. Wing length 0.54–0.59. Total length/wing length 1.65–1.92. Wing length/length of profemur 2.70–3.57. Coloration entirely brown except with three basal abdominal segments yellow, or entirely brown.

Head. AR 0.34. Flagellomere lengths (in µm) 41, 37, 43, 39, 55. Apical seta 21 µm long. Temporal setae 3, consisting of 1 inner vertical and 2 outer verticals. Clypeus with 6–7 setae. Tentorium 64–71 µm long, 6–7 µm wide. Stipes not measurable. Palpomere lengths (in µm):

14, 14–21, 21–26, 23–27, 43. Sensilla clavata not observable. Coronal suture 34 µm long.

Thorax. Antepronotal lobes reduced medially, antepronotum with 1 lateral seta. Dorsocentrals 4–5, acrostichals 2, prealars 2–4, and no supraalar seta. Scutellum with 2–4 setae.

Wing ( Tokunaga 1964 fig. 7b). VR 1.90–2.00, postcubitus not forked. Anal lobe reduced. C and R fused as a costal extension for 59–103 µm. R 4+5 ending far proximal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 straight and incomplete. Brachiolum with 1 seta, C between FR and apex of R 4+5 with 0–3 non-marginal setae, costal extension with 0–1 non-marginal setae, R with 1–3 setae, R 1 with 0–1, R 2+3 with none, R with 0–2, all other veins bare..

4+5

4+5

Legs. Spur of front tibia 16–18 µm long, spurs of middle tibia 14 µm and 11 µm long, of hind tibia 23 µm and 11 µm long. Width at apex of front and middle tibiae each 16–18 µm, not measurable on hind tibia, comb of 10 setae. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 65.

Abdomen ( Tokunaga 1964 fig, 7h). Tergite I bare, T II–VIII each with 4–6 setae. Sternites I–III bare, S IV with 2, S V–VII each with 4, S VII with about 26 setae.

Genitalia. Gonocoxite with 2 strong and 2 weak setae, apparently extending beyond tergite IX. Tergite IX undivided, with 2(?)–6 setae, apodeme against gonocoxite 46–57 µm long. Cercus 45 µm long. Seminal capsule 53 µm long, 41µm wide, with transverse striations. Notum 62–73 µm long.

Male, pupa and larva

Unknown.

Remarks

Pseudosmittia fusivenosa is closely related to P. paraconjuncta and P. conjuncta . The very short R vein giving the extremely high VR distinguishes it from all of the described species. The gonocoxites appear to extend beyond tergite IX as in P. conjuncta , while tergite IX appears to be undivided as in P. paraconjuncta . However, the specimens are damaged and slide mounted in lateral view and difficult to determine. The allotype of P. palauensis may represent a different species since the abdomen is fully brown and R 4+5 is fused to the costa for a shorter distance. However, in all other measurements there are no significant differences from P. fusivenosa .

Distribution

The species is known from Micronesia and Palau.
