Pseudosmittia zonata (Tokunaga) comb. n.

Smittia zonata Tokunaga, 1964: 528

Smittia guamensis Tokunaga, 1964: 532 , syn. n.

Material examined: PALAU: Babelthuap Island , Ngiwal, at light, holotype male, 20.v.1957, C. Sabrosky, ( USNM GG543 ) ; Koror Island , light trap, allotype female, 5.xii.1952, J. L. Gressitt ( USNM) . GUAM: Mount Lamlam , holotype female of S. guamensis , x.1952, N. L. H. Krauss ( USNM 6645 ) .

Diagnostic characters: The absence of volsellae and anal point (?) in the male and the presence of long posterolateral extension of the female gonocoxite makes the species easily distinguishable among species of Pseudosmittia .

Male imago (n = 1)

Total length not measurable. Wing length 0.62 mm. Wing length/length of profemur 2.88. Coloration yellowish brown with darker markings.

Head. AR 0.33. Separation between 3 terminal flagellomeres incomplete, thirteenth flagellomere 123 µm long. Other details of head not measurable.

Thorax. Antepronotum with 1 lateral seta. Dorsocentrals 5, acrostichals 2, prealars 2 (?). Scutellum with 4 setae.

Wing. VR 1.60. Anal lobe weak. Costal extension 78 µm long. R 4+5 ending proximal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 sinuate. Brachiolum with 1 seta, other veins apparently bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 37 µm long, spurs of middle tibia broken and 16 µm long, of hind tibia 37 µm and 18 µm long. Width at apex of front and middle tibiae each 21 µm, of hind tibia 27 µm. Comb of 10 setae, shortest setae 18 µm long, longest setae 34 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 58.

Hypopygium ( Tokunaga 1964, fig. 6i). Anal point possibly present and about 14 µm long, absent according to Tokunaga; setae on tergite IX not measurable; laterosternite IX apparently with 3 setae; apodemes and virga not measurable. Gonocoxite 130 µm long; no volsella. Gonostylus 59 µm long; megaseta 7 µm long. HR 2.19.

Female imago (n = 1–2)

Total length 1.22–1.54 mm. Wing length 0.54–0.67 mm. Total length/wing length 2.27–2.31. Wing length/length of profemur 3.10–3.22. Coloration yellow with darker vittae.

Head. AR 0.41–0.44. Lengths (in µm) of flagellomeres: 43–57, 32–37, 32–37, 27–32, 57–62. Strong apical antennal seta 14 µm long. Temporal setae 4–5, including 1–2 inner verticals and 3 outer verticals. Clypeus with 8–10 setae. Tentorium 71–96 µm long, 7–9 µm wide. Stipes not measurable. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 16–21, 21–27, 32– 43, 41–50, 66–82. Third palpomere with 6 scalpellate sensilla clavata. Coronal suture absent.

Thorax. Lateral setae of antepronotum not observable. Dorsocentrals 9–5, acrostichals 2, prealars 3. Scutellum with 4–6 setae.

Wing. VR 1.69–1.81. VR 2 1.37–1.41 Anal lobe indicated. Costal extension 48–78 µm long. R 4+5 ending proximal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 straight or slightly curved. Brachiolum with 1 seta, costa between FR and apex of R 4+5 with 7–9 non-marginal setae, costal extension with 7–8 non-marginal setae, R with 6, R 1 with 2, R 4+5 with 8–9 setae.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 23–27 µm long, spurs of middle tibia 22–23 µm and possibly absent, of hind tibia 30–37 µm and 18–21 µm long. Width at apex of front and middle tibiae each 18–21 µm, of hind tibia 23–30 µm. Comb of 12 setae, shortest setae 18 µm long, longest setae 37 µm. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 59.

Abdomen. Tergite I bare; T II–VI each with 7–16, 12 setae; T VII with 12–18; T VIII 14–15 setae. Sternite I bare; S II with 0–4; S III–V each with 4–8; S VI and VII each with 10–16; S VIII with 28 setae.

Genitalia ( Tokunaga 1964, fig. 7e). Gonocoxite with long digitiform posterolateral extension, with 3–4 setae. Tergite IX slightly divided, with altogether 4–8 setae. Cercus 41–55 µm long. Apodeme against gonocoxite 50–71 µm long. Seminal capsule relatively pale, 53–69 µm long, microtrichia not observed. Notum 35 µm long.

Pupa and larva

Unknown.

Remarks

The specimens are in poor condition. They were apparently mounted in a low quality Canada Balsam. However, both female types appear to have a postcubital fork, which was not mentioned by Tokunaga. As in many other species of the genus the postcubital fork is very indistinct and difficult to see. However, we could not find any trace of such a fork in the male, which also has 2 tibial spurs on the middle leg. It thus is possible that the male and the females are not conspecific. In that case P. guamensis would be the correct name for the females.

Distribution

The species is only known from the Mariana Islands and the Caroline Islands ( Tokunaga 1964: 529, 533).
