Type locality: USA: New York, Montauk Lake .
Type examined: Holotype male, USA: New York, Suffolk Co., Montauk Lake , 17.viii.1946 ( USNM).
Diagnostic characters: The broad, parallel-sided anal point, together with the long, pointed median volsella and the sharply pointed inferior volsella with rounded accessory lobe separate the male imago from other species of the genus.
Male imago (n = 1)
Total length 3.11 mm. Wing length not measurable. Coloration brown
Head ( Fig. 98 A View FIGURE 98 ). Antenna lost. Temporal setae 5, consisting of 2 inner verticals and 3 outer verticals. Clypeus with 4 setae. Tentorium 96 µm long, 23 µm wide. Cibarial pump and stipes as in Fig. 98 B View FIGURE 98 . Stipes 87 µm long, 34 µm wide. Lengths of first three palpomeres (in µm): 21, 30, 69, apical palpomeres lost, third palpomere as in Fig. 109 C View FIGURE 109 .
Thorax. Antepronotum with 4 lateral setae. Dorsocentrals 11, acrostichals 2, prealars 4. Scutellum with 6 setae.
Wing ( Fig. 98 C View FIGURE 98 ). Only one wing present. Costal extension 34 µm long. R 4+5 ending slightly distal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 slightly curved. R 4+5 without setae, other veins not clear.
Legs.Lost
Hypopygium ( Fig. 98 D View FIGURE 98 ). Anal point 37 µm long, 14 µm wide medially, completely free of microtrichia, but with a few lateral setae. Tergite IX with 10 setae, laterosternite IX with 5 setae. Transverse sternapodeme 50 µm long, no oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 98 E View FIGURE 98 ) 11 (?) µm long. Gonocoxite 144 µm long; superior volsella 23 µm long, median volsella 41 µm long, inferior volsella 25 µm long. Gonostylus 71 µm long, with dense microtrichia on inner margin; megaseta 9 µm long. HR 2.05, HV 3.12.
Female, pupa and larva
Unknown.
Remarks
Although the specimen is incomplete, the genitalia is so special that it warrants description. This and the preceding species may deserve a different placement when the other stages are known.
Distribution
The species is only known from the type locality in New York .
