Pseudosmittia pedata View in CoL sp. n.
( Fig. 113 View FIGURE 113 )
Type material: Holotype male, CANADA: New Brunswick, Kouchibougerae National Park , 9.vii.1977, I. M. Smith, (CH 4401–1, CNC) . – Paratype 1 female, same data as holotype except 6.vii.1978, D. R. Oliver & M. E. Roussel ( CNC) .
Diagnostic characters: The male imago can be separated from other members of the subgroup by the pediform inferior volsella and higher bristle ratios. The female differs from other members of the group by having no setae on R 1, only 2 on R 4+5, only 3 non-marginal setae on costa, and a strong apical seta on last flagellomere.
Etymology: From the Latin pedatus, having feet, referring to the pediform inferior volsella.
Male imago (n = 1)
All measurements and ratios within the range of variation of P. forcipata with the following exceptions: 5 inner vertical setae; Cu 1 ( Fig. 113 A View FIGURE 113 ) barely sinuate; thorax with 3 antepronotal setae; SV 1 4.05, BR 2 6.7, BR 3 7.0; tergite IX with 17 setae; virga ( Fig. 113 E View FIGURE 113 ) 33 µm long; inferior volsella ( Fig. 113 F View FIGURE 113 ) 37 µm wide, pediform.
Female imago (n = 1)
All measurements and ratios within the range of variation of P. forcipata with the following exceptions: Terminal flagellomere with strong apical seta (broken); fourth palpomere 43 µm long; 7 dorsocentral setae; VR 1.24; R with 3, R 1 with 0, R 4+5 with 2 setae, costa with 3 non-marginal setae proximal to apex of R 4+5; tergite IX with 12 setae, sternite VIII with 13 setae; seminal capsule 73 µm long, apparently without microtrichia, gonocoxite without posterior projection ( Fig. 113 G–L View FIGURE 113 ).
Pupa and larva
Unknown.
Remarks
The species is close to P. forcipata in the male imago. If the tentatively associated female is correctly assigned then it is very unlikely to turn out to be conspecific with P. forcipata .
Distribution
The species is only known from the type locality in New Brunswick .
