Holotype: CHILE. I. Región, Tarapacá: FF. CC., Arica– La Paz km 108–106, Puquios, 1158 m, 27 September 1955, Ricardi 3537 ( CONC, isotypes US-#02428996!, S).
This is still a very poorly known species and differs from B. verticillata essentially in its shaggier pubescence and stiffly erect habit plus its well-developed short shoots (brachyblasts). A critical revision of herbarium specimens, and preferably field studies are required to clarify the affinities of this taxon. Balbisia stitchkinii is morphologically intermediate between B. peduncularis and B. microphylla and may represent either an independent, closely allied lineage, or a natural hybrid between the two.
