Type locality and specimens. Habitat: Port Elizabeth, Dr. H. Brauns leg.

Dimensions. ♂ Pedes ultimi ut in faemina crassi. Pedum paria [leg pairs] ♀ 53, ♂ 53. Long. corp. mm 35, lat. 1,3 [length 35 mm, width 1.3 mm].

Type material. Syntypes 3 ( ZMH-A0000544-545 , ZMH-A0008167 ). SOUTH AFRICA: Eastern Cape Province, Port Elizabeth [33°57’29’’S, 25°36’00’’E] GoogleMaps .

Preservation. 2 jars (first jar with 2 vials). Jar 1 Label 1: LECTOTYPE Schendylurus australis Silv., Port Elizabeth : Kapland (Zool. St. Mus Hamburg) (typewriting). Vial 1 ( ZMH-A 0000544): Label. Lectotype Schendylurus australis Silv. Vial 2 ( ZMH-A 0008167): Label. Syntype Schendylurus australis Silv., Port Elizabeth, Dr. Med. H Brauns l. d. 15.XII.1898, det R.E. Crabill (Crabill handwriting). [separate microvial with the handwriting label LECTOTYPE]. Jar 2 ( ZMH-A 0000545): Label 1. Schendylurus australis Silv. Co-Typus. Dr Brauns d. 15.XII.98, Port Elizabeth, Silv. Det; Label 2. when found, 7. V.60, both specimens were dry, in very poor condition.—Crabill, 7.IV.60 (Crabill handwriting); Label 3. See also slides of mouthparts. Maxillae of lectotype absent, evidently out removed by Silvestri. det. R.E. Crabill 7. V.60 (Crabill handwriting); Label 4. Schendylurus australis Silvestri , Lectotype + Paratype desig.: Crabill, 6. V.60, Hamburg —N.B. Only 2 specimens found on 7. V.60, although jar label says there should be 7. Also, the lectotype lacks maxillae, which Silvestri removed but did not include in jar (Crabill handwriting). 1 microscope slide with a head preparation is also present (Paratypus Schendylurus australis Silv. desig.: R. Crabill 7. V.60 Hamburg).

Old type catalogue. Weidner (1960), p. 63, No. 36. Syntypes 2.

Type status. Note on file card: “ lectotype and paralectotype design.: Crabill, 7.5.1960 ”. Pereira & Minelli (1995) re-described this species from the paralectotype held at the ZMH and also listed the lectotype, thereby accepting Crabill’s type designations. Note that 3 types are present at the ZMH contra Weidner (1960).

Collection remarks. The specimens were collected by the German medical doctor and entomologist Hans Brauns (1857–1929).

Current systematic position. Schendylops australis ( Silvestri, 1907) .

A total of 49 type specimens belonging to 12 original type species or subspecies are preserved at the ZMH. No type material has been lost .
