2.1. T. gondii oocysts

Toxoplasma gondii oocysts of the Type III VEG strain obtained from experimentally infected cats, sporulated in 2% sulfuric acid and stored at 4 ǫC for approximately a year were donated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's Centre for Foodborne and Animal Parasitology , Saskatoon, SK, Canada. No viability assay was performed at the time of the reindeer inoculation due to the lack of resources. A few hours before the inoculation, three doses of 1,000, 5000 and 10,000 oocysts were washed free of acid and suspended in 5 ml of saline. These doses were administered by nasogastric intubation to reindeer 1, 2, and 3 respectively .
