Maranta View in CoL is one of the largest genera in Marantaceae View in CoL with ca. 50 species.The genus is easiest to identify by synflorescence characteristics: their bracts are quite inconspicuous, lax, green, and supporting clearly separated flower-pairs. The most commonly cultivated species in Singapore is M. arundinacea Linnaeus (1753a: 2) View in CoL (arrow-root, fig. 7J), seen in communal gardens as an ornamental. Other cultivated species ( M. leuconeura Morren [1874: 323] View in CoL in particular, fig. 7K–L) are small plants with distinctly mottled leaves, used as ground cover.
