Type Locality: "Vicinity of Barnaul" [Altaisk Krai, Russia] ( Chaworth-Musters, 1937).

Vernacular Names: Siberian Chipmunk.

Distribution: N European and Siberian Russia to Sakhalin; S Kurile Isls ( Russia); extreme E Kazakhstan to N Mongolia, China, Korea, and Hokkaido ( Japan). Introduced into Austria, France, Germany, Holland and Italy ( Niethammer and Krapp, 1978).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Subgenus Eutamias ; see Gromov et al. (1965:125). Koh (1994) compared Korean and Manchurian forms. Oshida and Yoshida (1994) described the chromosomes of T. s. lineatus.
