Type:—[fossil fruits] Haselbach,Altenburg district, Thuringia, Germany (holotype, Mai 7357, Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen, Dresden, Germany).
Occurrence:—Oligocene; Europe.

Note:—The generic name Cynoxylon (Rafinesque) J.K. Small (1903: 854) is a later nomenclatural synonym of Benthamidia Spach (1839: 106) , which is commonly considered as synonym of the genus Cornus Linnaeus (1753: 117) sensu lato. In this connection, Cynoxylon caroli Mai (in Mai & Walther 1979: 114), based on the fossil fruits from the Oligocene of Germany, is formally transferred to Cornus .
