Type species ­ Limnobia limnobioides Bigot, 1854 (syn. of Trentepohlia (Trentepohlia) trentepohlii ( Wiedemann, 1828)) .

Separation of this subgenus is based on the combination of some characters of the wing venation, as follows: three branches of Rs ending in the wing margin ( R 3, R 4 and R 5 which is fused with M 1 + 2 for some distance, vein M 3 lacking, discal cell missing, CuA 2 intersecting A 1 for a short distance proximal to the apex closing cell cup.

Subgenus Trentepohlia (Trentepohlia) View in CoL is one of the most species­rich among subgenera of Trentepohlia View in CoL , with 88 described species. It is very well represented in the Afrotropics, of which 50 species are listed. The species have also been reported from other regions, as Oriental (25 species), Australasian / Oceanian (14 species), East and West Palaearctic (each with 2 species), but it is missing in Neotropics and Nearctic Region ( Oosterbroek, 2015). One species, belonging to that genus, is described from Eocenian Baltic amber ( Alexander, 1931).
