Notes
Species complex. Owenia fusiformis was long believed to be a cosmopolitan species but in fact contains a number of pseudo-cryptic species worldwide (e.g. Martín et al. 2006). Owenia fusiformis sensu stricto was originally described from Sicily and currently no evidence exists for the presence of more than one species of the complex in the Mediterranean.
