Remarks.
This species was described by Karsten (1881) based on the sole collection from Finland. It had usually been regarded as a form of Hapalopilus rutilans ( Lowe 1956). However, our data show that specimens growing on Ribes spp. in North Europe are distinct from Hapalopilus rutilans and phylogenetically closer to Hapalopilus eupatorii . All specimens of Hapalopilus ribicola studied by us are from Finland, from branches of both wild and cultivated Ribes spp. The species is evidently widely distributed and just overlooked.
