Holotype. ♀ USA, Florida, Duval Co., Jacksonville, St. John’s Bluff (E. Doubleday) [ BMNH]

(Locality label reads “E. Doubleday, St. John’s Bluff, E. Florida ”).

Evylaeus pectoralis (in Mitchell 1960: redescription, key ♂; Hurd 1979: catalogue; Moure & Hurd 1987: catalogue) Halictus (Evylaeus) pectoralis (in Viereck 1916: catalogue)

Lasioglossum (Evylaeus) pectorale View in CoL (in Michener 1951: catalogue)

Diagnosis. Both sexes of L. pectorale can be recognised by the combination of mesepisternum coarsely rugose throughout ( Fig. 76C View FIGURE 76 ) and mesoscutum with distinct, coarse punctation throughout. Lasioglossum nelumbonis have similar sculpture on the mesepisternum but are easily distinguished by rugose anterolateral portion of the mesoscutum and distinctive propodeal pubescence ( Fig. 75A View FIGURE 75 ). Both L. cinctipes and L. truncatum have less rugose sculpture on the posterior portion of the mesepisternum (as in 76F), wider heads ( Figs. 43A, 43I View FIGURE 43 ) and fine mesoscutal punctation.

The black colouration and coarse sculpturing of the subgenus L. (Leuchalictus) may cause small individuals of L. leucozonium or L. zonulum to be mistaken for L. pectorale . Female L. (Leuchalictus) have vein 1rs-m strong and inner metatibial spurs denticulate, with short teeth. Female L. pectorale have pectinate inner metatibial spurs ( Fig. 5I View FIGURE 5 ). Male L. zonulum and L. leucozonium have yellow on the clypeus and distinct features of metasomal S6, either a V-shaped hair pattern in L. leucozonium or distinctive medial hair tufts in L. zonulum . Male L. pectorale have the clypeus entirely black ( Fig. 6I View FIGURE 6 ) and lack distinctive hairs on S6.

Redescription. FEMALE. Length 5.3–6.7 mm. Head length 1.47–1.73 mm. Head width 1.52–1.80 mm. Wing length 3.6–4.4 mm. (n=10)

Colour. Head and mesosoma black. Antenna black-brown, except ventral surface of flagellum reddish brown. Tegula dark reddish brown. Legs dark brown, except medio- and distitarsi reddish brown. Wing membrane hyaline, faintly dusky. Pterostigma reddish brown. Metasomal terga black-brown, apical margins pale brown.

Structure. Head round (L/W ratio = 0.96–1.01). Clypeus 2/3–3/4 below suborbital line. Eyes convergent below (UOD:LOD = 1.22–1.28). Gena narrower than eye. Ocelli normal. Pronotum smoothly rounded. Protibial spur with serrations as long as width of malus. Inner metatibial spur pectinate, teeth 4–5, basal teeth longer than width of rachis. Metapostnotum carinate on posterior margin. Propodeal lateral carina reaching dorsolateral slope, oblique carina high.

Surface sculpture. Supraclypeal area weakly polished medially, punctures sparse (i=1–1.5d). Gena and postgena carinulate. Mesoscutum polished-weakly imbricate; punctures coarse, contiguous laterally (i<d) but clearly separated between parapsidal lines (i=1–1.5d). Mesepisternum coarsely rugose. Metapostnotum coarsely rugose. Propodeum rugose laterally, smooth on posterior surface. Metasomal terga polished; punctures present throughout, except T1–T2 apical impressed areas impunctate medially.

Pubescence. Head and mesosoma with sparse plumose hairs. Metafemoral scopa with dense plumose hairs. Propodeum with sparse plumose hairs. Metasomal terga with apical fimbriae sparse. T1 with erect plumose hairs. T2–T3 with basolateral tomentum. Metasomal sterna with plumose scopa.

MALE. Length 5.0– 5.4 mm. Head length 1.34–1.60 mm. Head width 1.34–1.56 mm. Wing length 3.6–4.1 mm. (n=5)

Colour. Head and mesosoma black. Antenna black, except ventral surface of flagellum reddish brown. Legs dark brown, except medio- and distitarsi reddish brown. Tegula dark reddish brown. Wing membrane hyaline. Pterostigma reddish brown. Metasomal terga dark brown, apical margins reddish brown.

Structure. Head long (L/W ratio = 1.00–1.03). Mandible short, reaching opposing clypeal angle. Flagellomeres short, F2 subequal to F1, much shorter than scape. Eyes strongly convergent below (UOD:LOD = 1.31–1.48). Gena narrower than eye. Pronotum smoothly rounded. Metapostnotum posterior margin carinate. Propodeal lateral carina not reaching dorsolateral slope.

Surface sculpture. Supraclypeal area weakly imbricate, punctures relatively dense (i=1–1.5d). Gena and postgena lineolate. Mesoscutum polished; punctures dense laterally (i≤d), distinctly separated medially (i=1–1.d). Mesepisternum coarsely rugose. Metapostnotum carinate-rugose, apical margin separated from posterior surface by carina. Propodeum rugose. Metasomal terga polished, punctures distinct throughout.

Pubescence. Head and mesosoma with sparse plumose hairs. Lower paraocular area with sparse tomentum. Propodeum covered with sparse tomentum. Metasomal terga nearly bare, apical fimbriae extremely sparse. T2–T3 with very sparse basolateral tomentum. Metasomal sterna with sparse, plumose hairs (1.5–2 OD).

Terminalia . As shown in Figs. 7I View FIGURE 7 , 8I View FIGURE 8 . Gonostylus small, with short setae. Retrorse lobe long, broad, attenuated apically.

Taxonomic notes. Lasioglossum pectorale belongs to the “carinaless Evylaeus ” group; however, L. pectorale is very coarsely sculptured, which causes the propodeum to appear to have stronger carinae than most “carinate Evylaeus ”. Molecular phylogenetic studies place L. pectorale in a clade including L. (Hemihalictus) lustrans ( Danforth et al. 2003; Gibbs et al. 2012b), which has very different sculpturing.

A related species, L. pectoraloides ( Cockerell 1895) , occurs further to the west. It can be easily distinguished based on morphology, but DNA barcodes are nearly identical. Only by examining patterns of polymorphism can DNA barcodes of the two species be separated (see below).

Biology. This species is polylectic ( Moure & Hurd 1987). There are no published records of its nesting biology or social level, but it is believed to be a solitary ground-nester, based on its phylogenetic affinities ( Danforth et al. 2003; Gibbs et al. 2012a, b).

DNA barcodes. Twenty-five specimens sequenced (maximum intraspecific p-distance: 2.3%). The minimum interspecific p-distance from L. pectorale and L. nelumbonis is 4.2%. Twenty-five fixed differences separate L. pectorale from L. nelumbonis . One fixed substitution distinguishes L. pectorale from all other species included herein: 438(C) (see Table 2). The related species L. pectoraloides cannot be distinguished from L. pectorale based on a single fixed difference, however, each species has unique patterns of polymorphism that allow them to be differentiated using DNA barcodes.

Lasioglossum pectorale displays phylogeographic structure in its co1 haplotypes. Northern populations (Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Ontario) differ by 3 fixed differences from more southern populations (e. g., Florida, North Carolina, New York) with co-occurrence of the two haplotypes in southern Ontario. These three positions allow discrimination of the northern and southern populations and L. pectoraloides as follows: 190(T, A/G, T), 197(C, T, T), 554(A, G, G), where the bases are ordered northern L. pectorale , southern L. pectorale , and L. pectoraloides , respectively. Additional study of L. pectorale phylogeography would be of interest.
