Type Locality: USA, Oregon, neighborhood of Columbia River. Specimens from Marmot, Clackamas County, Oregon are considered typical ( Taylor, 1918).

Vernacular Names: Sewellel.

Distribution: W coast of North America from SW British Columbia ( Canada) to N California ( USA), isolated populations in N and C California, extending into W Nevada. See Hall (1981:335).

Conservation: U. S. ESA – Endangered as A. r. nigra ; IUCN – Vulnerable as A. r. nigra and A. r. phaea ; otherwise Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: Reviewed by Carraway and Verts (1993; Mammalian Species, 431).
