6. Orobanche lutea Baumgarten (1816: 215) View in CoL . Type:— ROMANIA (it has been reported by Gilli 1982: 20): “In Transsilvania, in pratis montosis siccioribusque ubique”, [leg. Baumgarten] (CL [herbaria with the Baumgarten collection]). Heterotypic synonyms:— O. rubens Wallroth (1822: 307) ; O. medicaginis Duby (1828: 349) ; O. buekiana Koch (1844: 619) ; O. hians Steven (1857: 354) ; O. linczevskyi Novopokrovskij (1950: 327) . Fig. 33D View FIGURE 33 .

Distribution: —The most common broomrape in Armenia, occurs in almost all regions of the country, especially in the eastern (Gegharkunik prov.), southern (Vayots Dzor prov.) and south-eastern parts (Syunik prov.) ( Fig. 38).

General distribution: —It occurs from western Europe through central, southern, Caucasus, Asia Minor, Iran to central Asia.

Habitat: —Steppe, rocky, loamy, grassy slopes, meadows, edges of fields, alfalfa plantations, clover fields, abandoned fields, vineyards, roadsides, ruderal habitats, railway embankments, edges of forests. As can be seen on the map of distribution ( Fig. 38), its occurence often overlaps with the system of road communication routes, where it prefers slopes on the roadside. Perhaps along the roads the hosts are weakened by exhaust and the parasite infects them more easily, as well as in these disturbed habitats, the seeds are easily burried, and have acces to host roots. Higher temperature and air currents produced by passing vehicles might also contribute to seed dispersal. The elevation range is very diverse, usually (650)1500‒2000(2500) m.

Hosts: —Parasitic exclusively on Fabaceae (mainly on Medicago sp. , M. sativa L., rarely Lotus sp. , Trifolium sp. ).

Phenology: —Flowering May to June (July), fruiting (June) July–August.

Conservation status: —Least Concern (LC). The species has rather wide distribution in Armenia (8 floristic regions). Populations vary from several to several hundred individuals.

Notes: —A polymorphic species with usually numerous and differentiated populations. Several varieties and forms have been described. Many of these forms and varieties are observed in Armenia. However, they are a definitely smaller group within typical plants in populations. Their taxonomic importance is probably low and colour/morphology depends largely on sun exposure, host condition and soil parameters.
