Baetiella macani ( Müller-Liebenau, 1985) bona species
( Figs 46–47, 49 View FIGURES 45 – 54 )
Neobaetiella macani: Müller-Liebenau, 1985: 108 ; Baetiella bispinosa: Waltz & McCafferty, 1987: 563
Diagnosis. Thoracic dorsum with distinct tubercles ( Fig. 47 View FIGURES 45 – 54 ). Posterior margin of metanotum and abdominal terga I–II each with a single posteromedian protuberance, terga III–IX each with a pair of protuberances, the distance between bases of protuberances on tergum III much less than the length of protuberance ( Fig. 46 View FIGURES 45 – 54 ). Hind wing pads vestigial. All legs with a single finger-like white coxal gill ( Fig. 49 View FIGURES 45 – 54 ); claw with two rows of denticles, outer row with 8–9 acute denticles increasing in length apically, inner row with 4–5 short and blunt denticles medially, subequal in length. Gills present on terga I–VI only ( Fig. 46 View FIGURES 45 – 54 ). Median caudal filament reduced to one segment, cerci slightly longer than the body length.

Comments. This species was originally established by Müller-Liebenau (1985) as Neobaetiella macani Müller-Liebenau based on nymphs collected in Taiwan. Later, Waltz & McCafferty (1987) synonymized Neobaetiella with Baetiella and considered N. macani as a junior synonym of B. bispinosa ( Gose, 1980) without any comments. This species shares morphological affinity with B. bispinosa (Gose) as both species has a single posteromedial dorsal protuberance on abdominal terga I–II, and paired protuberances on terga III–IX, as well as some unusual characteristics within the genus, i.e. the presence of single finger-like coxal gill and tarsal claw with two rows of denticles. However, the gills are only present on terga I–VI and cerci are slightly longer than body length in this species, whereas in B. bispinosa (Gose) , gills are present on terga I–VII and the cerci exceed 1.5 times the body length; furthermore, the length of dorsal protuberance on tergum III is much longer than the distance between the protuberances and the protuberance are obtuse apically, whereas in B. bispinosa , the length of dorsal protuberance on tergum III is shorter than the distance between the protuberances and the protuberance are slightly acute apically. Fujitani (2006) also mentioned B. bispinosa with 7 pairs of gills and B. macani only with 6 pairs and suspected that they are not conspecific (personal communication with Fujitani). We thus consider this species as a bona species, namely, Baetiella macani ( Müller-Liebenau, 1985) which is removed from the synonymy with B. bispinosa ( Gose, 1980) and reinstalled as a valid species.
