Eocuma calmani Fage, 1928b: 335 View in CoL , Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ; Jones, 1956: 198. LeLoeuff & Intes, 1972: 28, Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 .

Material examined. 1 male, 8.0 mm (St. 13: grab sampling; 15°00.048´S, 12°07.685´E)

Description. preadult male, 8 mm total length. Integument calcified. Carapace ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 A, B) about 1.8 times as long as high and as well as broad; antero-lateral angle prominent and rounded; without antennal notch; pseudorostral lobes meeting for a longer distance in front of eyelobe; eyelobe faintly rounded; eye not recognizable; lateral carina reaches nearly entire lateral border on carapace, with two pairs of horns, the lateral carina forms a stronger ridge between the both horns, a further strong ridge proceeds translongitudinal from the posterior ventral part of the carapace to the proximal horn; with an elevation of the anterior middorsal part of the carapace starting at the eyelobe, visible as lateral ridges dorsal to midlateral line in anterior half and diagonal posterior meeting the lateral carina; with a slight dorsal ridge across the carapace marking the end of the elevation; elevation anterior with two pairs of depression middorsally on the level of lateral horns.

Pedigerous somites 4 and 5 each with a pair of plumose setae posterior dorsal.

Abdomen with five pairs of pleonites, not fully developed.

First antenna ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 C), peduncle triarticulate, article 3 very long and slender, about four times longer than second article; flagellum biarticulate, very short, half as long as peduncle article 2, with two aesthetascs distally; accessory flagellum rudimentary. Second antenna not visible.

Maxilliped 3 ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 A, B), basis 2.2 times as long as the following five segments combined length, arcuate, strongly calcified, with its distal extension reaching nearly to the end of merus, with a row of ten plumose setae on inner margin, distal half of the basis angular, the anterior margin with one row of fine setulae; merus longest with strongly produced distally; ischium shorter than merus, broad, with three plumose setae and a row of fine setulae on inner margin; carpus half length of merus, with one short plumose seta and a row of fine setulae on inner margin, faintly diluted distally; propodus and dactylus slender, of same length; propodus with three plumose setae on inner margin.

Pereopods: pereopod 1 ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 C), basis 0.8 times as long as the following five segments combined length, straight, strongly calcified, with a prolongation distally reaching the middle of merus, prolongation with one row of fine setulae; ischium and merus short; carpus, propodus and dactylus slender and very long; propodus the longest, about 1.5 times longer than ischium and merus together; carpus slightly shorter than propodus; dactylus slightly shorter than carpus; exopod of pereopod 1 with seven articles, with two long plumose setae on each article standing on both sides. Pereopod 2 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 A), basis short, about same length as propodus and dactylus together, with one long plumose seta; ischium fused with basis; merus slightly shorter than dactylus, with one short cuspidate seta distally; carpus shorter than propodus; dactylus with long setae distally. Pereopod 3 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 B) basis only slightly shorter than the remaining segments together, with four long plumose setae; ischium shorter than broad, with one long seta distally; merus longest; carpus slightly shorter than merus, with two strong long setae distally; propodus shorter than carpus, with on long strong setae distally; dactylus very short. Pereopod 4 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 C) similar to pereopod 3. Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 D) similar to pereopod 3, with long plumose setae on basis, ischium, merus and carpus.

Uropods ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 D) slightly longer than telsonic somite; rami nearly three times as long as peduncle; peduncle with 7–8 long plumose setae on inner margin; exopod with eight plumose setae on inner margin and two short terminal cuspidate setae; endopod slightly shorter than exopod, uni-articulate, with 17 long plumose setae on inner margin, with angular emargination distally bearing a short mircosetulated seta, with one very short terminal seta.

Remarks. Fage (1928 b) described the species from two immature individuals of 5 mm total length. Later, LeLoeuff & Intes (1972) figured a female about 9 mm in total length not in detail. The present study describes for the first time a preadult male. The adult male is, to date, unknown. The two pairs of horns forming pointed anterolateral projections are characteristic for E. calmani and are developed even in younger individuals. The shape of the antenna 1, the uropopds and the pereopods 1 and 2 conforms well to the descriptions of Fage (1928 b). The occurrence of a strong cuspidate seta on merus of pereopod 2 was recorde. Differing from that, the preadult male developed twice as much plumose setae on peduncle of uropod and the endopod inner margin. Additionally, the exopod carries eight plumose setae on inner margin. This, and the occurrence of pairs of plumose setae dorsally on pedigerous somites, have not been described before. Finally the lateral carinae on carapace continue only over anterior half of carapace in young individuals and the female, whereas it continues over four-fifths of the entire length in preadult male.
