Finally, the type specimen of Rana hymenopus does not match the species to which the name ‘ Strongylopus hymenopus ’ is currently applied. Contrary to Poynton (1964), and pending more information on variation within Amietia from southern Africa, Rana hymenopus ( Boulenger, 1920) should be considered a junior synonym of Amietia fuscigula . These name changes are important, not only in correcting the systematic status of both species, but also in providing further information that can be used in developing appropriate conservation strategies for these regionally endemic species.
