28. Impatiens umbellata B. Heyne ex Wallich (1824: 464) View in CoL .

Type citation:—“In the collection of Dr. Heyne.”

Type:— INDIA. Without precise locality, 11 August 1818, Herb. Heyne, Wallich cat. n. 4757 (lectotype K 001039834!, designated here).

Residual syntypes: — INDIA. Without precise locality, s.d., Herb. Heyne, Wallich cat. n. 4757 ( BR 0000013347253!, CAL!, E 00301367!, E 00301368!, P 04538722! and P 04538723!). Without precise locality, s.d., Herb. Rottler, Heyne s.n. ( K 000694955!).

Distribution:— India, endemic and rare (Kerala and Tamil Nadu).

Notes:—In the protologue of Impatiens umbellata, Wallich (1824) cited the type information as ‘In the collection of Dr. Heyne’. Pertaining to this specification, eight specimens collected by Heyne were traced (BR0000013347253, CAL, E00301367, E00301368, K000694955, K001039834, P04538722 and P04538723). Of the choice of specimens, K001039834 is designated here as the lectotype as it agrees well with the protologue.

In Indian flora ( Wight & Arnott 1834; Hooker 1859 & 1874; Gamble 1915; Vivekananthan et al. 1997; Rathakrishnan 2005, Bhaskar 2012), in IPNI, Impatiens umbellata is cited with authorship “B. Heyne ex Roxb.” and in The Plant List 2013 as “B. Heyne”. This species was formally described by Wallich (1824: 464) in Roxburgh’s Flora Indica; or Descriptions of Indian Plants (Carey & Wallich edition 1824) on the basis of specimens collected by B. Heyne (1770-1819), though he attributed this species to B. Heyne. In this book only the first three species from page no. 453–455 was described by Roxburgh (1824) and that is also clear from the original manuscript of Roxburgh published later in 1832, which includes three species only. The species no. 4–16 was described by Wallich.
