General distribution. Western Indian Ocean: East Africa, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Socotra, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman.
Habitat. Rocky/cobble intertidal.
Remarks. Dardanus tinctor is a relatively common species in comparison to its congener, D. lagopodes on the Iranian coast and is usually found together with a symbiotic sea anemone on its shells ( Apel 2001; Moradmand 2007; present study). Apel (2001) mentioned that the record of Dardanus pedunculatus by Barnard (1950) from South Africa would likely have to be referred to D. tinctor .
