Stranvaesia nussia var. oblanceolata Rehder & Wilson (1912a: 193) View in CoL . Type:— CHINA. Yunnan, forests around Szemao, alt. 1500–1600 m, A. Henry 11615 [lectotype (selected by Vidal 1965: 232, first step; second step, designated here): the bottom branch of US-00097547!; isolectotypes: the top branch of US-00097547!, A-00038562!]. Other syntypes examined: A. Henry 11615a (A-00038566!, K-000758307!), 11615b (A-00038563!, K-000758306!, NY-00429887!), 11615e (A-00038564!, K-000758308!, NY-00429888!), 11615f (A-00038565!). 2. Pourthiaea Decaisne (1874: 146) View in CoL . Type species: Pourthiaea villosa (Thunberg 1784: 465) Decaisne (1874: 147 View in CoL ; Lectotype designated by Iketani & Ohashi 1991).

Shrubs or small trees, deciduous. Winter buds small; scales imbricate. Leaves alternate, usually papery, margin serrate, rarely entire; stipules present, caducous. Inflorescences terminal, corymbose or umbellate, rarely compound-umbellate, many flowered. Hypanthium cupular or campanulate to cylindric. Sepals 5, persistent. Petals 5, contorted or imbricate in bud, base clawed. Stamens 20. Carpels 2–5; ovary semi-inferior, 2–5-loculed; styles 2–5, free or connate at base; ovules 2 per locule. Fruit a pome, globose or ovoid, somewhat fleshy, 2–5-loculed, free from calyx from apex to nearly 1/3, with persistent sepals; carpel crustaceous or membranous, each locule 1- or 2-seeded.

About 15 species, distributed in east and southeast Asia.
