Redescription

MALE. "Exactly similar to female except in antennae" according to the original description ( Narayanan et al. 1960, p. 889), but that statement is incorrect because all known males of A. orientale , as redescribed herein, usually have a hyaline forewing (a very small infumate spot may be occasionally present on the disc, Fig. 45), with its chaetotaxy also being sexually dimorphic. The single male paratype of this species is missing from IARI ( Hayat & Anis 1999; J.M. Heraty, personal communication). However, both the aforementioned male specimen from the IARI area in New Delhi, which is a type locality of Maidliella orientalis , and another male from Sri Lanka definitely belong to A. orientale . They have a hyaline forewing, without dark bands, and with discal setae different from those on the female forewing. The Sri Lankan male has females from the same series, which we identified as A. orientale . Antenna (Fig. 44) with scape very short; genitalia (Fig. 46) elongate, as typical for Acmopolynema .

Diagnosis

Member of the orientale species group. The female of this species was adequately redescribed and illustrated by Hayat & Anis (1999) and Xu & Lin (2002). The body length, the size of the dark bands on the female forewing (particularly of the apical one), and to the lesser degree the lengths of funicle segments vary in this species [hence the above synonymies of A. maculata Subba Rao and A. nixoni Subba Rao , which are within the range of A. orientale ], that led to its unnecessary oversplitting into four taxa by Subba Rao (1989). The important features for recognition of A. orientale are as follows: female antenna with all funicle segments light brown ( Fig. 41 View FIGURES 41–43 ); propodeum with wide submedial carinae reaching or almost reaching its anterior margin ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 41–43 ); metacoxa and metafemur reticulate; female forewing ( Fig. 43 View FIGURES 41–43 ) with characteristic markings and chaetotaxy; male forewing usually hyaline or at most with a very small infumate spot on the disc.

Distribution China, India, Sri Lanka [new record], and Thailand [new record].
