Taxonomy. Callithrix argentata marcai Alperin, 1993 View in CoL ,

Brazil, mouth of the Rio Castanho (= Rio Roosevelt), a left-bank tributary of the Rio Aripuana, Amazonas State, Brazil.

Known only from three skins in the Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro. Monotypic.

Descriptive notes. Head-body ¢.22 cm, tail ¢.36 cm; weight 280-310 g. Marca’s Marmoset is brindled brownish dorsally, with a long-haired, light ocher mantle. Arms are somewhat paler than the body. Legs, tail, and head are chestnut colored. There is no white thigh stripe or white mark on the vertex. Skin on the face is dark and depigmented around the muzzle. Marca’s Marmoset differs from the Golden-white Bare-ear Marmoset ( M. leucippe ) and the Silvery Marmoset ( M. argentatus ) in the distinct color of the mantle, from the Black-tailed Marmoset ( M. melanurus ) in not having the white hip patches, and from Snethlage’s Marmoset ( M. emiliae ) in the pale hands and feet and dark brown forehead.

Habitat. There is no specific information for this species, but predictably, it should occur in lowland terra firma forest, most particularly in the vicinity of tree falls and secondary growth (successional forest).
