Salamandra bislineata Green, 1818

Holbrook (1839b “1838”:127, pl. 29) listed this species (the Northern Two-lined Salamander, Eurycea bislineata ) as Salamandra “bilineata,” attributing Green’s spelling to “an error of the press.” He placed S. flavissima Harlan, 1826 in synonymy, which had first been suggested by Harlan (1835). The description and the illustration by C. Rogers are clearly of Green’s species, and Holbrook noted its wide range from Massachusetts to South Carolina , having collected it himself “… in the lower part of North Carolina .” The plate is labeled “30” in some copies (e.g., MCZ library). Holbrook (1842e:55, pl. 16) essentially reprinted the account with a few minor alterations and reproduced the same plate. There are no currently recognized specimens of E. bislineata among Holbrook’s extant collections. Duméril et al. (1854:93) reported a Holbrook specimen from “Caroline de Sud” in the MNHN, but we were unable to locate it. We hypothesize this to be an error; the 1860 “Catalogue taxonomique des Amphibiens” records MNHN-RA 0.4688 (an E. guttolineata ; see above) as “ Spelerpes bilineatus .”
